One of the wines we’re most geeked about for this year’s Pink Fest is the 2012 rosé by Domaine du Pegau (center), one of the most famous producers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It’s the winery’s first rosé ever.

Let’s face it. Rosé in the U.S. gets a bad rap.

Thanks to the way that rosé wines were marketed to U.S. consumers in the 1970s and 1980s, Americans generally view rosé wine as cheap quaffing wine only to be opened during the blistering months of summer when fine wines will be muted by the extreme temperatures.

But when you travel to Europe (as Vino Vino owner and Pink Fest creator Jeff Courington does two or three times a year), you quickly realize that there is so much more to rosé wine than just “White Zin[fandel].”

In fact, Europeans drink rosé wines all year round: when done right, the gentle tannin of rosé wine, its freshness, and its bright acidity make it the ideal food wine.

And THIS is just one of the reasons that Jeff launched Vino Vino’s annual Pink Fest: to turn Austin on to the many wonders of pink wine, its versatility, food friendliness, and its overall deliciousness.

To borrow Jeff’s phrase, we’ll be pouring a BUTTLOAD of rosé wine on Saturday, June 1 at the tasting: 60+ wines and 7 distributors who will all be on hand to chat about the wines.

And Jeff is adamant that all of the wines poured at the festival will be 2012, the current vintage for most rosé wine.
