In other news… we like wines that taste like herbs…

The Mas de Gourgonnier 2006 Les Baux de Provence tastes like the scrubs and herbs that grow in the countryside of Provence in southern France. This meaty, earthy, inky, rich, and intensely aromatic wine is a great pairing for the stews of winter. It tastes so much like herbs, we almost wanted to smoke it!

$42 at Vino Vino (for dinner or to take home).

And in case you were wondering…

The answer to yesterday’s riddle Why is a musician’s bandstand like an oven?

Because it’s how s/he makes his bread!

Riddle me this:

Why is a musician’s bandstand like an oven?

In other news… we like wines that taste like rocks…

Cantine Valpane Barbera del Monferrato Rosso Pietro is another one of Kermit Lynch’s super-groovy discoveries. Most folks think of Alba and Asti but in my view (and experience), the BEST Barbera comes from Monferrato, where the nutrient-poor, ancient marl and sandy subsoil is ideal for creating wines with intense minerality and earthiness. This wine is ALL ABOUT umami (savory) flavors: earth, mushroom, rock… Totally traditional in style, this wine is also a great example of a carbonic maceration: the winemaker loads whole clusters of grapes into a vat and lets gravity break the skins and start fermentation naturally with native yeast. As in the wines of Beaujolais, it helps to create intense fruit flavor. Wine geeks will LOVE this wine. And we love it, too!
